The Royal Mint announced at the end of last week that it has now officially sold out of the UK Royal Wedding Gold Plated Silver £5 Coin. As a British numismatic first from the Royal Mint – the first official UK coin issue to be plated completely in Gold – this sell out is even more significant.
On this blog in February we predicted that this issue would sell out, but the pace of the sell out has surprised even us. In just two months since release, the coin has met intense demand from collectors the world over, confirming the fact that UK firsts will always be met by immense public interest.
Furthermore, the rapid sell-out of the Gold Plated Silver £5 Coin has re-affirmed the prominence that Royal Wedding issues have had and the mass global collector demand that such issues have generated. As a UK numismatic first and a commemorative of the Royal Wedding, it seems quite possible that the Gold Plated Silver £5 Coin will be sought after in years to come.
