Royal Canadian Mint releases ultra-high relief Diamond Jubilee Gold coin

On the back of the run-away success of its sell-out 2012 Diamond Jubilee $300 Gold Coin, the Royal Canadian Mint has released its 99.999% Pure Gold $50 Coin in celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee this year.  In a world first for a 99.999% pure gold coin, it has been struck in ultra-high relief proof quality.

In order to obtain this ground-breaking ultra-high relief proof finish portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, the Royal Canadian Mint actually struck each coin four times and hand polished the finished product in an exceptionally complex minting process.

The Royal Canadian Mint commented: “Striking the purest gold in the world at such a high relief presented a mix of challenges and advantages due to the softness, malleability, and flow rate of gold.  The result is an image of extraordinary height and fluidity.”

With the design being approved by Buckingham Palace, approval was also given for another world first – a left facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.  Weighing 33.17 grams and measuring 33 millimetres in diameter, the coin has been limited to only 500.  Latest reports confirm that 96% of the mintage has already been sold, so we strongly anticipate a sell-out announcement to be made by the Mint any day now.
