The United States Mint has recently announced the release of the immensely popular Proof American Gold Eagle coins for 2012. Available in 1 ounce, ½ ounce, ¼ ounce, 1/10 ounce and as part of a four coin set, all the coins are struck in 22 carat gold with each featuring the famous ‘W’ mint mark indicating their production at the West Point mint in New York State.
Recognised the world over, the obverse of the coins feature the iconic “Standing Liberty” design by Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
This design has been on all American Gold Eagle since their re-introduction in 1986 and was originally made famous on the $20 Gold Eagle from 1907 until 1933. The reverse features the “Family of Eagles” design by Miley Busiek.
What will likely come as a surprise to many is that despite the product limit of 30,000 for the 2011 Proof American Gold Eagle 1oz coin completely selling out last year, the United States Mint has kept this limit the same for 2012. Furthermore, the mint has actually reduced the overall mintage of the coin from 70,000 to 60,000. With the 2010 1oz also selling out, a strong tradition of sell-outs has built up surrounding this coin, so there is no reason to doubt a repeat performance in 2012.
