With the popular series now in its fifth year, the Perth Mint of Australia has just released the Koala Gold Proof Coins for 2012. As with the previous years, the coins are to be minted in 2 ounce, 1 ounce, 1/10 ounce and 1/25 ounce of 99.99% pure gold, each to a pristine proof finish and with the 1 ounce coin being minted in high relief on both the obverse and reverse.
Like the Perth Mint’s iconic annual Kangaroo gold coin series, the Koala coins feature a new unique design for each year, with the reverse design for 2012 displaying the eponymous marsupial sleeping on the branch of a eucalyptus tree, alongside the Mint’s historic ‘P’ mintmark. The obverse of the coins feature Ian Rank-Broadley’s famous portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
In common with many other Perth Mint issues, this Koala gold coin series has a history of sell outs. Indeed, the 2oz gold coin has completely sold out of its annual 250 mintage limit for the last three years in succession. Despite this obviously strong demand, the limit of 250 for this coin remains in place for 2012, which is a clear indication to us that we can expect another sell out in the months ahead.
