The Royal Mint has just announced the UK’s new commemorative coins for 2020. Marking the year’s memorable events and anniversaries, here are the new themes and designs unveiled today:

This special £5 coin has been issued to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the end of King George III’s reign. King George III was one of our most important monarchs, he was the first King of the United Kingdom and remains the longest reigning King in British history, reigning for 59 years.

2019 marks the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day (VE DAY), a day which signalled the end of the Second World War in Europe and brought long awaited peace to our nation. This new £2 coin pays tribute to the millions of lives that were lost during the conflict and to the first steps towards lasting peace.

This brand new £2 coin celebrates ‘100 years of mystery’ by honouring the life of one of this country’s greatest authors, and arguably the Queen of Crime, Agatha Christie. 2020 marks the centenary of her debut mystery novel ‘The Mysterious Affair at Styles’ and introduced the iconic detective Hercule Poirot. With her vison and ingenuity, she went on to define the mystery genre.

400 years ago The Mayflower’s maiden voyage began. The first Pilgrims from Plymouth set sail to America to establish a colony in the new world. The spirit of the Mayflower passengers endures to this day and now for the first time this defining voyage has been commemorated on a brand new UK £2 coin.

This 50p coin celebrates Team GB as they head off to Tokyo for the 2020 Olympics. Team GB continue to push boundaries and for the first time, the team is expected to select more female than male athletes for the 2020 games.
