In 1976, Argentinian forces occupied the Falkland Islands and South Georgia. In response, for the first time since the Second World War, all branches of the British armed forces were deployed and within days a British task force set sail across the Atlantic.

It was one of the first military endeavours to be televised, with daily reports of heroic fighting and sadly, of the casualties.

Lasting 74 days, the Falklands War was one of the largest British military operations since the Second World War, utilising all elements of the Armed Forces, with 255 British personnel losing their lives.

This year marks the 40th Anniversary of the conflict and to pay special tribute the 2022 Masterpiece coin has been issued.

Each Masterpiece is unique. Every single coin has been hand-painted by artist Adam Taylor. Most colour on coins these days is printed using high-speed pad-printing machines or using modern UV printing techniques.

Adam has used traditional model-painting techniques on the coins, which means each one has unique brush-strokes and subtle differences in the colours. Adding acrylic paint to the high relief poppy gives it that iconic red colour and further enhances the coin design.

The time, care and attention required on a project such as this, truly does make each one of the 350 a one-off.

Struck in .999 Silver to an impressive high relief finish, this years’ Masterpiece coin has been created using different heights of relief to give a real depth to the design.

A map of the Falklands can be seen on the very bottom layer of the coin, with a total of 40 poppies poignantly sitting on top, to mark the 40th anniversary of the Falklands War. The largest, and 40th, poppy has been hand painted in red.

In support of the Royal British Legion

The Royal British Legion, which was founded on 15 May 1921, is the UK’s largest Armed Forces charity. They provide financial, social and emotional support to members and veterans of the British Armed Forces, their families and dependents.

The RBL is at the heart of a national network, with 180,000 members, 110,000 volunteers and a network of partners and charities who help them give support wherever and whenever it’s needed.

Every year the RBL organises the Poppy Appeal, its biggest fundraising campaign, and leads the nation in commemorating and honouring those who have served and sacrificed.

Every year, the Poppy coins released help to directly support the Royal British Legion and their amazing work providing financial, social and life-long support to the Armed Forces community.

It’s only right that the last word goes to the Royal British Legion’s Director General, Charles Byrne who says this about the remarkable Masterpiece Poppy:

“The 2022 Masterpiece Poppy Coin is a timeless token of Remembrance. Not only is this coin a poignant reminder of all those who have served and sacrificed, but it also helps the Royal British Legion continue to be there for today’s Armed Forces community, no matter what.”
