Remembrance Day is a time when we honour and remember the sacrifices of those who served in the armed forces, defending our freedoms and values. It is a day of reflection on the bravery and selflessness shown by countless men and women throughout history, and a reminder of the impact of service that continues to be felt today. The stories of veterans, both past and present, bring home the true meaning of sacrifice and the enduring need for support and care for those who have given so much for their country.

John Webb, a former Royal Engineer from Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire, dedicated six years of his life to the Army. In March 2020, the tragic death of his estranged wife, Fiona, left John and his three children navigating profound grief during the height of the pandemic. Forced to leave his engineering job to care for his children, John found himself struggling with the financial and emotional weight of his new responsibilities.

In this darkest hour, the Royal British Legion (RBL) stepped in. Providing practical and emotional support, the RBL helped John secure a larger property, supplied essential household items, and offered emotional guidance. Reflecting on this lifeline, John shared: “In my darkest days, I was suicidal…The RBL’s support anchored me down. Without the Legion, I really don’t know where I would be or if I would be here in all honesty.”

John’s story is a testament to the power of community and the enduring support provided by organisations like the Royal British Legion.

Nigel Hardisty from Scarborough served for ten years in the Marines, with deployments to Northern Ireland and the Falklands. During the Falklands conflict, Nigel narrowly escaped death in a devastating attack on the RFA Sir Galahad. Survivor’s guilt followed him for years, clouding moments that should have been filled with celebration and pride.

In 2023, Nigel faced homelessness and despair. With nowhere to turn, he sought help from the RBL. Thanks to the Armed Forces Covenant, Nigel found himself with a secure flat and the support needed to rebuild his life. He proudly shared, “I am happier than I’ve been for months, and I never thought I would need the Royal British Legion, but I am so glad they were there.”

Today, Nigel gives back by collecting for the Poppy Appeal, a role he cherishes, bringing in over £2,500 last year and finding joy in connecting with his community.
